B.C.'s Kang To Face Vernon "Tiger" White In Main Event At "W-1: Bad Blood" -- March 20th

Yesterday morning (Jan. 25th), the news broke that B.C.'s Denis Kang (32-12-1) had signed a two-fight deal with Toronto-based W-1 promotion. It was rumoured that Kang would make his debut with them as early as their upcoming "Bad Blood" show. Today, MMACanada.net is reporting that Kang will indeed fight on that card, which is set for the Pierre Charbonneau Centre in Montreal, Quebec Canada on Saturday March 20th, 2010.

Not only that, it has also been confirmed that Kang's opponent for that show will be Vernon "Tiger" White (26-33-2 [pictures above])-- a fighter who is almost as well-travelled as he is widely respected in the fight game. Vernon is well known for suffering a KO at the hands of Chuck Liddell (21-7)at UFC 49 in mid-2004, but he has fought regularly since that time against some of the biggest names in the business, compiling a record of 6-7 in a variety of promotions.

This will, by no means, be an easy fight for Denis Kang because White's years of experience mean there is nothing Kang can do that "Tiger" hasn't seen before. Still, it is certainly a winnable fight for one of B.C.'s brightest MMA stars and just the sort of win that could start Denis Kang on the road back to the octagon.

B.C.'s Denis Kang Signs Two-Fight Deal With Quebec's W1 Promotion

According to MMACanada.net, Vancouver, B.C.'s very own Denis Kang (32-12-1) has signed on for a pair of fights with Quebec's W1 promotion.

This announcement comes fresh off the heels of Denis' recent loss at UFC 105: Couture vs. Vera (Nov. 14th, 2009) where he succumbed to strikes from the U.K.'s Michael Bisping (18-2) near the end of the second round. Kang went 1-2 in his recent UFC run, but was cut by the promotion, likely because Zuffa felt that the high salary that Denis rightfully commanded upon signing his UFC contract could no longer be justified.

Surely Denis is eager to start building momentum for another run at the big show, and rumour he could see action as early as the W1: Bad Blood card scheduled for March 20th, in Montreal.

Denis Kang's B.C.-based fans surely hope he will fight on the West coast again sometime soon, but wish him nothing but the very best of luck in his upcoming fights.

With former Vancouver resident Denis Kang (32-11-1 2NC) set to compete on the main card at this Saturday's UFC 105, now seems like a good time to debut "B.C. Biography," a new series of posts that will highlight British Columbia's brightest MMA stars. Not every fighter profiled needs to have been born here, but each must have a significant connection to the province.

Denis Kang, son of a Korean father and a French mother, moved around the world repeatedly as a child before finally settling with his family in North Vancouver at age eleven in 1988. Young Denis spent the rest of his childhood in B.C. and it was here that he first began training in mixed martial arts.

Kang's first two fights, both wins, took place in Vancouver in 1998. Kang has fought a total of six times in B.C., all in Vancouver and Kelowna, with a near perfect record of 5-0 with 1 N/C. He used that early-career success as a springboard to dominant runs through Japan's Pride Fighting Championship and Korea's Spirit MC. He went a combined 16-1 with 1 N/C in those MMA promotions. In all, Kang has fought professionally in six countries and will attempt to score a win against Michael "The Count" Bisping (17-2) in lucky number seven when he fights in the U.K.'s Manchester, England this weekend. When Kang sticks to his game plan and remains focused during a fight, he's a very tough obstacle for any fighter in the UFC's middleweight division.

These days, Denis Kang trains occasionally with Georges St-Pierre at Tri-Star gym in Montreal and, most often, with American Top Team in Coconut Creek, Florida. One place he doesn't train is British Columbia owing primarily to the fact that, since MMA was deregulated in Vancouver in 2007, it's become next to impossible to find high-quality sparring partners or technical support for MMA in B.C. According to Kang, there's also a negative social stigma attached to MMA in British Columbia that doesn't exist elsewhere in Canada:

"In Vancouver, you have this attitude where people assume everyone in MMA is in a gang. I think it has the negative image that has been brought to the sport by the media, that it's all gang association. In Montreal, it's about the training."
