Rory MacDonald vs. Carlos Condit Likely For UFC 115 In Vancouver

Pretty much as soon as B.C.'s very own Rory MacDonald (10-0) finished dismantling Mike "The Joker" Guymon (11-3-1) via first-round armbar at Ultimate Fight Night 20 on January 11th, the speculation began about who "The Waterboy" would fight on the UFC's debut card in Vancouver. This morning, MMAMania.com claims to have the answer as they are reporting that Rory is likely to fight Carlos "The Natural Born Killer" Condit (24-5) at UFC 115, tentatively set for June, 12th.

Most Canadian MMA fans are already familiar with MacDonald's impressive resume, which includes ten finishes in as many fights, two KOTC title wins-- including a lightweight world title, and one octagon win, all by the tender age of twenty. MacDonald, who now fights at welterweight, is undeniably a stud with very few limits on his future in the sport of MMA. A bout against a fighter as accomplished as Condit would be, by far, the toughest test of Rory's career, but also a great way to demonstrate for fans where he really stands in the UFC's welterweight division. Furthermore, it would almost guarantee Rory a spot on the televised main card at UFC 115. For the longtime student at Kelowna's Toshido Martial Arts, that would be a dream come true.

Carlos Condit began his MMA career in 2002, but has already fought a virtual who's who of the MMA landscape. Like MacDonald, Condit began fighting as a professional while still in his teens and enjoyed immediate success. He won thirteen of his first fourteen fights with his only loss coming to well-respected Carlo Prater (24-7-1). Condit would later avenge that loss and dropped only three bouts in his second fourteen en route to earning a berth in the UFC.

At the time he entered the octagon, Condit was considered a serious threat to almost anyone in the division, having just successfully defended the WEC welterweight belt three consecutive times. He was matched with Martin "The Hitman" Kampmann (16-3) in a main event at April, 2009's Ultimate Fight Night 18, where Condit lost by split-decision. Despite clearly dropping the first round, Condit most recently scored a split-decision win of his own over another tough youngster in Jake Ellenburger (25-5) at Ultimate Fight Night 19.

A resident of New Mexico by birth, Condit currently trains at Jackson's Submission Fighting in Carlos' hometown of Albuquerque. His cage-name, "The Natural Born Killer," is fitting since he has scored finishes in all of his twenty-four career victories, except the last one, for a finishing rate of over %95 in wins. With a near even split between submissions and (T)KOs, Condit is a threat everywhere the fight might go.

Of course, Rory MacDonald is a finisher as well, and will look to make an enormous statement with a decisive win in this fight. The entire crowd at GM Place will be behind Rory, which certainly won't hurt his chances of announcing his arrival as the newest contender at 170lbs.

B.C.'s Own Rory MacDonald Victorious in UFC Debut

The fight occurred on the untelevised portion of the undercard, but journalists present at Ultimate Fight Night 20 reported that Kelowna, B.C's Rory MacDonald (10-0) defeated Mike "The Joker" Guymon (11-3-1) by arm bar at 4:27 seconds of the first round.

The detailed play-by-play, available at Sherdog.com (middle of page), paints a picture of a very close fight. Rory began by scoring an early takedown. He then landed a solid knee from the clinch as the two fighters returned to their feet. At that point, Rory got clipped and briefly dropped by Guymon, but recovered quickly and returned to his feet. MacDonald then caught an incoming kick from "The Joker" and returned the scrap to the mat.

From there it was all MacDonald as he proceeded to rain down blows and ultimately finished with a late armbar that cut-short the thirty-five-year-old Guymon's long-awaited octagon debut.

Congratulations, Rory! Rumble, Young Man, Rumble!

B.C.'s Rory MacDonald To Make UFC Debut In January, 2010

Longtime readers of BC MMA Fan may remember that the very first post focused on Rory MacDonald (9-0), a young welterweight and King Of The Cage champion from Kelowna. Since then, MacDonald has won a fight by TKO and been signed by the UFC. It now appears that his UFC debut will go down on the undercard of Ultimate Fight Night 20 on January 11th, 2010. The show set to air live on SpikeTV and will be headlined by Nate Diaz vs. Gray Maynard.

A win in January would make the then twenty-year-old MacDonald one of the youngest fighters ever to notch a victory in the octagon, but wouldn't top Dan Lauzon's record of 18 years, 14 days. Unfortunately, MacDonald's fight isn't likely to make the televised portion of the card.

Rory MacDonald's likely opponent is Mike "The Joker" Guymon (11-2-1). A fellow King Of The Cage champion, Guymon is currently on a five-fight win streak with one of his two career losses coming to current UFC lightweight #1 contender, Diego Sanchez. Guymon should prove a stern test for MacDonald.

British Columbia's Rory MacDonald Signs With The UFC

In a move that won't surprise MMA fans in this province, the UFC has signed one of our own, Kelowna's Rory MacDonald (9-0), to a four-fight contract. Rory most recently competed at last month's King of The Cage show in Alberta. In fact, his victory there, over fellow British Columbian Nick Hinchliffe (11-5), was the subject of one of this site's first entries. It was a dominant performance over a grizzled veteran, in Hinchliffe, who had fought in the past at weights as high as 205 lbs. It was also likely what put MacDonald on the map for the UFC.

The 20-year-old MacDonald, who captured King Of The Cage's Canadian and World light weight titles while still a teenager, remains undefeated and has finished every one of his opponents. He's expected to compete in the UFC's stacked welter weight division, but there's currently no word on when or who he'll fight first.

Rory MacDonald Defeats Nick Hinchliffe by K.O., Rd. 2

So far, there are no official descriptions of the fight, but King Of The Cage Canada is reporting on their facebook.com site that Kelowna's own Rory Macdonald (9-0) has successfully defeated Nick Hincliffe (11-5) by knock-out. The finish came during the second round in the main event of the KOTC: Disturbed card, which was held in Edmonton, Alberta on Friday, September 25th.

What's most impressive about this win is that, while MacDonald is just moving up from lightweight, his opponent has fought as high as light-heavyweight in the past. What's more, despite the fact that the majority of Hinchliff'e's wins have been (T)K.O.'s, while most of MacDonald's victories have come by tapout, it was the younger, smaller, MacDonald who finished their fight with strikes.

Clearly, my confidence in Rory MacDonald was not misplaced. I expect big, big things from him and believe that he'll break into one of the big shows in the near future, possibly even the UFC.

Rory MacDonald Is The Real Deal

For those out there who don't already know, Kelowna's Rory MacDonald (8-O) is B.C.'s brightest up-and-coming MMA star.

He's been competing since 2005 and has already captured a lightweight belt for King Of The Cage. These days, the 20-year-old submissions specialist fights at welterweight, where he expects to remain for the foreseeable future.

As you can see above, Rory has a fight this Friday in Edmonton on the KOTC: Destruction card. Realistically, my blog is so new that no one is likely to read this in time to make it to the show, but I'll post again after the fight with the result. For us B.C.'ers the outcome will be acceptable either way, because Rory's opponent is Nanaimo-based fighter, Nick Hinchliffe (11-4).

Seriously though, regardless of tomorrow's result, look for big things from Rory MacDonald in the future. He's the real deal.
