UFC 109 Fighters Predict The Superbowl

Well, some of them do anyway. More than one explains how the only sport he cares about is MMA, which is definitely understandable.

For the record, I've got Indianapolis: 33 - New Orleans: 24. Manning is just too good, plus Indy has the much stronger defense. Colts all day.

"UFC 109: Relentless" Preview

Full Details:

What: UFC 109
: "Relentless"
When: Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010, at 10 p.m. ET on pay-per-view (PPV)

Where: Mandalay Bay Events Center, Las Vegas, Nevada

Preview:

Over the last year or so, the UFC has moved away from subtitling their pay-per-view (PPV) shows with catchy tag-words, in favour of naming cards after the main event fighters. That is what makes it is so revealing that Saturday's broadcast, headlined by UFC hall-of-fame'ers Randy "The Natural" Couture (17-10) and Mark "The Hammer" Coleman (16-9), will be known as UFC 109: Relentless.

The Zuffa brass must have felt that expecting Couture's name to anchor three of the last eight UFC cards, along with UFC 102: Couture vs. Nogueira and UFC 105: Couture vs. Vera, was a bit too risky. It is likely that they also feared Coleman's name would not carry enough impact to sell the card effectively. UFC 109's poster, featuring six fighters in almost equal prominence, further implies that the UFC is concerned about the lack of a bankable main event.

The strategic use of the term "Relentless" is significant given that four fighters on the main card are over thirty-five years of age: Matt Serra (35.5 yrs), Frank Trigg (37.7 yrs), Mark Coleman (45.1 yrs), and Randy Couture (46.5 yrs). The word, which, in this case, can be taken to mean battling constantly against rising odds, suggests the UFC believes the storyline of four aging fighters searching for continued MMA relevance is the card's strongest selling point. While that's definitely debatable, it is certainly true that the losers of those legends' fights will have a tough time getting back to being featured prominently on UFC main cards.

Despite all their skillful verbal jabbing, Matt "The Terra" Serra (9-6) and Frank "Twinkle Toes" Trigg (19-7), whose fight opens the PPV card, realize that staying afloat in the UFC really takes constant activity and, above all, wins against tough, hungry competitors-- both of which are fairly tall orders for fighter's at their respective ages.

For Mark Coleman, this is truly the biggest fight of his career in terms of mainstream relevance. Judging by his comments in recent weeks, "The Hammer" understands that a win here would instantly change his life, increasing his fame more than any other victory of his storied career, while a one-sided loss would allow his critics the leeway needed to write him off almost completely. Knowing this, he has drastically changed his approach to training, adding a personal strength-and-conditioning coach for the first time. Whether that will be enough to best "The Natural," who has long been known to use cutting-edge training techniques, remains very much to be seen, but the altered routine is a great sign Coleman is taking this fight seriously.

Though it is a bit odd, given that he is the most aged fighter in the UFC, Randy Couture is easily the best insulated of the night's old dogs from being cut after UFC 109. He will likely receive one more shot at a big-name fighter even if he loses this fight. Conversely, with a win over Coleman, Couture could even be looking at a light-heavyweight title shot against the winner of May's Machida vs. "Shogun" II. That is a testament both to "The Natural's" immense marketability and his incredible career successes in fights that have occurred past age forty, which currently account for just over %40 of his professional career.

The co-main event at UFC 109: Relentless features former UFC title challenger Nate "The Great" Marquardt (29-8-2) who finds himself one win away from another crack at Anderson Silva (25-4-0)'s long-held middleweight belt, which, by then, may actually be held by Vitor Belfort (19-8). Before Nate can worry about any of that, he must first defeat Chael Sonnen (23-10-1) who makes up for anything he lacks in natural ability with grittiness, hard work, and a lightning quick wit. He has used the latter to great effect in recent weeks, constantly hyping this fight to the media, while criticizing both Anderson Silva and Mark Coleman. As a result, Chael has raised his profile with MMA fans, which very effectively made this fight significantly more compelling. Sonnen's silver tongue won't help him when the octagon closes, however. Luckily for Sonnen, he'll have his grittiness and strong work-ethic to fall back on-- just ask Yushin Okami (23-5), who was handily upset by Sonnen over three full rounds at UFC 104.

The PPV card also features the return of welterweight Mike "Quick" Swick (14-3) from his stunningly one-sided loss to current title-challenger Dan Hardy (23-6) at UFC 105. Swick will look to return to the winners' circle as he faces Paulo Thiago (12-1), who, despite having already fought three times in the UFC, remains best known as the guy who, in his octagon debut at UFC 95, TKO'ed veteran Josh Koscheck (14-4) with a surprise, first-round uppercut. It is an interesting style clash because Swick is known mostly for his dynamic striking, while Thiago is often touted for his ground skills. We already know that Thiago can swing a bit, but fans should get a much-welcomed opportunity at UFC 109: Relentless to learn if Swick's grappling is up to snuff for elite competition.

The other main card fight on Saturday is between a pair of middleweights who each recently lost to one of the night's co-main even fighters. Dan Miller (11-2), who was soundly routed over three rounds at UFC 98 by Chael Sonnen, will face Brazilian submissions-master Demian Maia (11-1), was knocked out by Nate Marquardt in 21-seconds at UFC 102. The winner of this fight will be back in the title hunt, while the loser can likely look forward to fighting a scrappy up-and-comer on Spike broadcasts or PPV undercards. Speaking of which, a pair of excellent lightweight battles [ [Mac Danzig (18-7-1) vs Justin Buchholz (8-4) and Melvn Guillard (22-8-2) vs. Ronys Torres (14-1)] will air live on SpikeTV starting at 6:00pm PST (9:00pm EST) prior to Saturday's PPV broadcast.

UFC 109: Relentless comes directly after one of the worst-selling cards in recent UFC history, UFC 108: Evans vs. Silva, which sold in the neighborhood of 300,000 buys, as compared to well over 600,000 for UFC 107: Penn vs. Sanchez. For this weekend's UFC 109 Zuffa would likely be satisfied with a number that evenly splits the difference between those last two, which would mean something in the range of 450,000 buys. There's a good chance they'll achieve that, too.

Even more importantly, however, is that, after Saturday's event, the UFC will enter a long stretch of extremely marketable cards including: UFC 110-- their Australian debut; UFC 111-- featuring a welterweight title fight and an interim heavyweight title fight; UFC 112-- their debut in Abu Dhabi, which features two title fights; UFC 113-- from Montreal and featuring the LHW title rematch of Machida vs. Shogun II, plus the PPV debut of "Kimbo Slice;" UFC 114-- featuring the unexpectedly delayed TUF 10 blockbuster fight "Rampage" Jackson vs. Rashad Evans; and, of course, UFC 115-- the octagon's likely debut in Vancouver, B.C.

So, basically, even if UFC 109: Relentless doesn't capture MMA fans' attention much more than the disappointing UFC 108 did, its positioning means this Saturday's card will likely be remembered fondly as the quiet before the storm... or, you know, like that really great garlic toast they give you while you're waiting at restaurants, but that you can never quite make right at home. Yeah, it will be like that for sure.

First Ever "Ultimate Nugget Champion" Crowned At Jackson's Submission Fightings

Most of us have been involved in some ridiculous shenanigans, but you have to hand it to the boys at Jackson's Submission Fighting down in Albuquerque, New Mexico. They could have just had a simple chicken nugget eating contest, but instead they chose to go the distance with ring entrances, world-famous corner men, ring girls, a belt on the line, and none other than Clay "The Carpenter" Guida (25-11) as the referee. It's pretty funny stuff and pretty intense nugget gorging action.

It's also worth noting that Tom "Kong" Watson (10-3), a participant in Ulitimate Nugget Chapionships I, is set to face Canadian Travis "The Gladiator" Galbraith (17-6) on the main card of Maximum Fighting Championships 24: Heat XC, which goes down in Edmonton, Alberta on February, 26th. In the interests of fair competition, one Hopes that Watson will have fully digested all those delicious deep-fried chicken chunks by then.

World Extreme Cagefighting To Attempt PPV For "WEC 48: Faber vs. Aldo" on April 24th

After years of sly suggestions and slight-of-hand speculation, World Extreme Cagefighting's G.M. Reed Harris announced today that WEC 48: Faber vs. Aldo will be the WEC's first PPV card. It is set for Saturday, April 24th at Arco Arena in Sacramento, California-- the reported cost to purchase the card is $44.99 USD .

Many had expected the WEC would ease their way onto PPV at a more affordable price-point, but obviously it was determined internally that the market could bear a couple of stacked WEC cards per year at a cost just slightly below that of a PPV event by Zuffa's other promotion, the UFC. The WEC, which typically holds cards on the relatively obscure VS. cable network, currently promotes fights in three of MMA's lowest weight classes [lightweight (155 lbs.), featherweight (145lbs.), and bantamweight (135lbs.)], which have historically been a tougher sell to the majority of fight fans.

So far, the card at WEC 48 is set to feature two title fights and one title eliminator. Former longtime WEC featherweight champ and the promotion's most iconic poster-boy, Urijah "The California Kid" Faber (23-3) will challenge the newly-crowned featherweight champion Jose Aldo (16-1 [pictured below]) for the 145lb. strap, while Benson "Smooth" Henderson (11-1) and Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone (11-2) will rematch their epic battle from WEC 43 with the winner claiming the lightweight title that Henderson recently won at WEC 46. Meanwhile, former, twice-defending featherweight champion Mike Thomas Brown (23-5) is set to face TUF 5 runner-up Manvil "The Anvil" Gamburyan (10-4) with the victor being first in line to face the winner of Faber vs. Aldo for the featherweight strap.

WEC 48: Aldo vs. Faber is certainly shaping up to be among the most exciting cards the WEC has ever promoted, but whether enough people will deem it worthy of the price is something that we will have to wait until April 24th to learn. For industry watchers, this event will provide a pretty clear barometer both of where the WEC ranks in the sporting public's consciousness and of how far MMA has advanced into the mainstream. To date, no promotion other than the UFC has claimed significant success on PPV.

Vancouver's UFC 115 Gets A Third Likely Bout: Tyson Griffin vs. Evan Dunham

The latest likely edition to UFC 115 in Vancouver was announced today and involves a pair of lightweight training partners at the Xtreme Couture Gym in Las Vegas-- Tyson Griffin (14-2, 7-2 UFC) and Evan Dunham (10-0, 3-0 UFC).

The rumoured bout would join Pat Barry (5-1) vs. Gilbert Yvel (36-14-1) and, of course, Kelowna's own Rory MacDonald (10-0) vs. Carlos Condit (24-5) on the quickly-growing card.

Tyson Griffin is a wildly entertaining wrestler and striker who is known for keeping up a high pace. He has scored several "Fight Of The Night" bonuses as well as victories over the likes of Clay Guida (25-11), Gleison Tibau (20-6), and Rafael Dos Anjos (13-4). After scoring his five previous wins by decision, and earning an unfortunate reputation as a non-finisher, Griffin finally broke out of that slump at UFC 103 by TKO'ing former title-challenger Hermes Franca (19-9) in the second round. Griffin will look to build on that momentum in beautiful British Columbia this summer.

Evan Dunham, opened a lot of eyes in the co-main event of last November's Ultimate Fight Night 20, when he finished Ultimate Fighter 8 winner Efrain Escudero (12-1, 2-1 UFC) with a slick armbar in the third round of a very close fight. Dunham is a powerful lightweight who likes to drag opponents to the mat to look for submissions, but is also comfortable standing. Despite having less MMA experience, Dunham (28) is actually three years older than Tyson Griffin (25).

To bill this as a showdown between training partners is somewhat misleading. Griffin has been a mainstay at Xtreme Couture for years and is often cornered by Randy himself, while Dunham only recently joined the Las Vegas gym. Besides that, Team Xtreme Couture is an unusually large group in which the camaraderie between each of the many fighters is necessarily diluted. As such, fights between Xtreme Couture fighters are actually fairly common.

If it is made official, this fight will almost surely be slotted in on the main card fight at UFC 115, which means there could be as few as two PPV fights left to be announced for the event on June 12th, 2010. It has also been rumoured, though with much less certainty, that Chuck Liddell vs. Tito Ortiz III may go down in Vancouver.

Moving Day!

All day today, B.C. MMA Fan is relocating from the sunny Okanagan to B.C.'s provincial capital. As a result, we will be unable to cover the day's news, but having our headquarters in Victoria will position us to cover even more live MMA events, both on Vancouver Island and in the lower-mainland, and will help to foster our continued growth.

The first event will be this Friday's Extreme MMA Western Championships, an amateur event featuring over thirty live fights. The event is set to go down in Nanaimo's Port Theatre and begins at 7:00pm. I will be there to cover the fights, take some pictures, and meet both the fighters and the event's promoter, Don Arnott. It should be a great night of fights and I fully expect to see the house packed with Island MMA fans.

Tickets are on sale at the Port Theatre Box office (250-754-8550) or online at www.porttheatre.com. For more information go to www.cacsc.ca and see video footage of Extreme MMA in Action.

Canadian Tim Hague Is Not Impressed By Upcoming UFC 109 Opponent Chris Tuchsherer

Alberta's, and arguably Canada's, best heavyweight Tim "The Thrashing Machine" Hague (10-2, 1-1 UFC [pictured left]) is hoping to rebound at this weekend's UFC 109: Relentless. In his last fight, at UFC 102: Couture vs. Nogueira, Tim came out on the business end of Todd Duffee (6-0, 1-0 UFC)'s record-breaking seven-second knock out.

Tim seems to like his chances against his next opponent, Chris Tuchsherer (17-2, 0-1 UFC), though. Tuchsherer is a training partner of UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar (4-1).

It all started with this video that Tuchsherer posted recently on youtube.com. We get a look inside his training camp and are introduced to the intricacies of his "Caveman Training":

Hague then fired off this response on the popular MMA Underground Forum forum, which is popular with both fighters and hardcore MMA fans:

/ Licks Chops / I am not impressed by your performance...
I have respect for Chris. He is a great guy, and I hope to be able to train with Chris/Brock's camp some day, but that looked about as intense as my warm up.

B.C. MMA Fan is withholding its official predictions until later in the week, but I have to agree with Tim that this video is not particularly impressive. The high tempo music doesn't help either, it only makes Tuchsherer look even slower. For more from Tim Hague, find a brand-new exclusive interview featuring the big man and interviewer-extraordinaire David Stanford of MMACanada.net. The video can be found at the top of the "Featured Video's" section.

Nick Diaz: Extended Post-Fight Interview

In this interview, following his first-round TKO over Maruis Zaromskis (13-4) at Strikeforce: Miami, Nick Diaz (21-7-0 1NC) discusses winning the belt, suspect judging and officiating in MMA, and why he disagrees with all of his career loses.

Nick Diaz also makes it clear that he would rather fight someone with a bigger name than Jay Hieron (19-4) for his first title defence. Interestingly, he continually insists that he would like to fight Georges St.-Pierre (19-2), which can't happen in Strikeforce.

Apparently, Strikeforce president Scott Coker sympathizes with Nick's position as it is now rumoured that Diaz' next opponent will be Hayato "Mach" Sakurai (35-10-2), who is much better known to MMA fans than Hieron. That fight is not a perfect fit either, though, given that "Mach" has lost his last two fights to Zaromskis and Akihiro Gono (31-15-7).
