Stacked "UFC on VS. 1" Gets Even Better With Addition of Kongo vs. Buentello

A heavyweight match-up was announced yesterday between Cheick Kongo (14-6-1) and Paul "The Headhunter Buentello (27-11) for the already incredible UFC on Vs. 1 on March 21st.

Kongo is fresh of a first-round submission loss at UFC 107: Penn vs. Sanchez to current interim heavyweight title challenger, Frank Mir (13-4). Buentello, last fought on that same card, but in a somewhat controversial majority decision loss to The Flying Dutchman, Stefan Struve (19-3). It was only the second career decision and the first decision loss for "The Headhunter." Between them, Kongo and Buentello have scored a combined twenty-six (T)KO's in their forty-one victories, good for a combined (T)KO rate in wins of over sixty-three percent.

This stellar fight could easily serve as the co-main even on most free TV cards, but, in the case of UFC On VS. 1, it was lucky just to make the televised portion. As mentioned in an article published here recently, it seems as though the UFC may be attempting to get the attention of Comcast, who are the new majority owners of NBC, of which the VS. network is a subsidiary. Some have speculated that Comcast will invest heavily in VS. programming so it is possible that the UFC is putting its best foot forward here to secure the cable giant's confidence in the marketability of MMA.

In a bit of "possible" good news for Canadian UFC fans, the guys at Fightlinker.com are reporting that the UFC has said the fights will "probably" be available on a Canadian television network as well.

Unfortunately, former lightweight champion Sean "The Muscle Shark" Sherk (33-4-1) was forced to withdraw from his rumoured fight with Clay "The Carpenter" Guida (25-11) at UFC On Vs. 1. This was the third scheduled fight in a row that Sherk was unable to fulfill, so one has to wonder if his MMA career has taken too great a toll on his body for him to continue. Guida has instead been tabbed to face Shannon Gugerty (12-4), who last suffered a submission loss to Britain's Terry Etim (14-2) at UFC 105: Couture vs. Vera.

UFC on VS. 1 main event fighter Jon "Bones" Jones (9-1) is seen below in a recent interview:
