Marloes Coenen Talks Victory, Title Shot Against Strikeforce Women's Div. Champ "Cyborg"

Props to mmafanhouse.com

It didn't get the press that a title-eliminator deserves, but Marloes Coenen's (17-3) first-round, arm bar victory on the under card at last night's Strikeforce event puts her first in line to fight 145lb champ Christiane "Cyborg" Santos (8-1), perhaps as soon as January. Coenen's opponent last night, Roxanne Modafri (13-5), had beaten Coenen previously by split decision, but, according to the above video, Coenen was suffering from an illness at the time. Avenging that recent loss makes Coenen that much more legit as an opponent for the champ, "Cyborg," who has been a one-woman wrecking crew throughout her tenure at Strikeforce. She won the first-ever women's belt by obliterating the so-called "Face of Women's MMA," Gina Carano (7-1), in August.

Say what you will about women's MMA (I enjoy it), but you have to hand it to Stikeforce when it comes to scouting talent. They're very smart to offer something that the UFC does not in order to differentiate themselves from the market leader. Also, one glance at Marloes Coenen should tell you that, like Gina Carano, her striking beauty makes her a marketer's dream. It helps that she seems really cool and genuine, as well.
